Christmas Chocolate Yule Log Recipe

Christmas Chocolate Yule Log Recipe

The Christmas Chocolate Yule Log is a favorite childhood Christmas Eve tradition of mine. During the 19th century in France, wooden yule logs were burned on Christmas Eve. Historically, a yule log symbolizes the new year and good luck.

Follow this recipe below to make this classic recipe for your holiday festivities. Note, an update my mom would make to the recipe is to swap out the filling with vanilla ice cream. Peppermint ice cream is another fun option for the filling. This delicious and beautiful treat is a show stopper at any holiday party. Happy Holidays!

Recipe

Chocolate Roll
3 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
2/3 cup sifted cake flour
2 Tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. baking powder

Filling:
Vanilla or Mint Ice Cream

Or (the traditional filling, if you choose)
2 sticks of butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1 Tbsp. vanilla sugar
2 egg yolks

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

  • Line a sheet jelly roll pan (approximately 11x16) with buttered coated wax paper.

  • Beat the eggs and sugar until thick and pale.

  • Mix the flour, cocoa and baking powder; sift into the egg batter.

  • Blend well and spread the batter in the pan.

  • Bake for 6 minutes.

  • Sprinkle the cake with confectioners’ sugar and invert it onto a turkish towel—immediately roll up tight with towel as one would any jelly roll. Cool.

  • Add ice cream for the filling.

  • If you prefer no ice cream use the original recipe ingredients— Cream together the butter, sugar, and vanilla sugar for filling. Add the egg yolks and beat until fluffy.

  • When chocolate roll is cool, spread the cake with the filling and roll it up again.

  • Fashion the roll like a yule log on your favorite platter and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

  • Top off the dessert with berries or holiday decor for a pop of color.
